Our Nuns

We started out as a dharma centre with five lay people. Things change and now Thekchen Choling (Singapore) is a temple with lay people and sangha with our location officially recognised as a place of worship. Two of our members who were lay practitioners have taken vows and become nuns.

We have several other members who also wish to become nuns. It is our aim to make every effort to support members of the sangha and anyone who wishes to become a monk or nun. We have put plans in place to have a resident Geshe to also provide teachings. Regrettably, a lack of space now prevents us from having more people stay in our temple as resident monks and nuns, which is now driving our search for a location to house them nearby.

While it may appear easier to become a renunciate in Singapore, it is actually much more difficult to give up a comfortable life and deal with expectations of friends and family and take a very brave step in giving up one’s life for others. We rejoice and hope that you will also help in anyway you can to support the continued growth of a strong monastic community in Singapore.

The nuns are available to give blessings or advice. In addition, you can make offerings to them as she represents the Sangha, one of the Three Jewels all Buddhists take refuge in.You may also request them to recite prayers for you if you are facing difficulties in your life.

Ani Thubten Chodron

Ani Thubten Chodron, was ordained in Nepal by Denma Locho Rinpoche and received her vows from His Eminence Dagri Dorje Chang.Rinpoche. She has been a long-time disciple of Lama Thubten Namdrol Dorje. Having worked for almost 14 years in the commercial sector, she finally found her calling in an ordained life.

Ani Lobsang Dechen

Before Ani Dechen was ordained, her work in scientific research involved live experiments on animals which sometimes required them to be killed. Having been in touch with Dharma for some time, she began to realize the negative effects of killing which outweighed any benefit that could have been achieved and felt great regret. Deciding to devote her whole life to practice for a better future life towards enlightenment, she was ordained by Khen Rinpoche from Kopan Monastery on 25th May, 2006.

"Like what Buddha had said before, do not follow his teachings blindly but experience it ourselves … it is a religion that we can analyze ourselves and put it into practice."
