The prayer wheel is a manifestation of the Chenrezig’s (Guan Yin) holy speech. This is because it contains Guan Yin’s mantra “Om mani padme hum" printed on paper.
Through this practice, one creates the cause to achieve the holy mind, body and all the qualities of Guan Yin, also known as the Compassion Buddha.
Buddhist texts teach that spinning the Mani Wheel (or prayer wheel) is equivalent to having recited all the mantras inside the wheel! Turning the Mani Wheel is thus extremely beneficial.
Spiritual Director Lama Thubten Namdrol Dorje first commissioned and installed Singapore’s first giant mani wheel in 2003. It stands 3m high and is 1.38m in diameter.
Since then, due to humidity and other local weather factors, the physical state of paper contents within the wheel had deteriorated and required replacing.
On 11 Nov 2007, we re-consecrated the wheel, filling it with 218 million new mantras and many precious items like jewels and money, contributed by students and members of public.
We are now awaiting the return of the outer casing consisting of 86 plates, which have been sent for gold-plating. Once these are completed and installed, this shall be the biggest gold-plated Mani Wheel in Singapore.
For a donation of $3,000, you can have your dedicated name written on each plate. |
